INTROVERT&EXTROVERT

Medium/ Media: Motion graphics

Introvert & Extrovert is two looping motion graphics about introvert and extrovert. Both of them are projected with the audios on the walls. The audiences can watch and hear the looping motion graphics with audios in the dark space. Procreate is used to produce this work.

When the audiences enter the dark space, they can see two looping motion graphics projected parallel on the walls, one on the right wall and the other on the left wall. And for both videos, the audios are in stereo, and for the left video, the audio is left audio channel, for the right video, the audio is a right audio channel, so the audiences can hear both of the sounds separately, clearly, and will not mix up the audios.

For the introvert motion graphic, all the things look calm, because the introvert person focuses more on the internal feelings, thoughts, and moods, so the colors for this motion graphic are cold (green, blue, purple). There are some actions that can show she is calm and prefer time to herself like the plants are growing around this person while she closes the eyes and listens to the music, and laying on the big pink back cushion while reading the book. Then there is a question that appears, and she is trying to find the best way to answer because introverts sometimes are sensitive, they are afraid of the other person will feel uncomfortable or if she is the only one say this answer and it will make herself embarrassing, so the introverts need to write the ideas down because writing can give them the chance to think over what they want to say first. Next, there are many sentences around her that other people say to her, these sentences are the introverts want to hear most, because they prefer time to themselves and work alone, drained by social interactions. When she finishes the book, two of her friends come, introverts are the same as the other people, they have friends too, but only a close circle of friends, they have the same hobbies, like read books and watch movies, these are belonging to quiet hobbies.

For the extrovert motion graphic, the colors are all opposite to the cold colors, because extroverts are outgoing. The beginning of the motion graphic is many dots around her, these dots can represent they like to express themselves, and also can represent enthusiasm. Next, she says a lot of things, opposite to the introverts, extroverts like to share their ideas and what she did to the other people, not only friends, also they make friends easily, they enjoy meeting new friends. For other people, extroverts are always optimistic and active. Also, they don’t like to stay at home by themselves, they like to stay with people, and because they are confident in large groups, they naturally seem like the leader, people are willing to hear what they say.

The voices from the audio are from my friends, I asked them what they think about introverts and extroverts, and I think to put people’s thoughts as the audio can add more meanings to the motion graphic, also can let the audiences think about what introvert and extrovert mean to them when they hear the audio.

The reason why I use motion graphics to show the extrovert and introvert is the animations and colors can show my ideas directly to the audiences, especially use the strong complementary colors, which can bring the audiences to the opposite world. The audios I choose to ask my friends to say instead of myself is because I’m an introverted person, I understand more about the actions that introverts do, but only a little for the extroverts, so I asked two introverts and two extroverts to talk about extrovert.

Introvert and extrovert are two words that can describe people, they are characters, but most people think an introvert is a negative word, and they will relate to something like hiding in a corner, don’t want to talk to people, no one will notice them and shy, and because these biases, some introverts begin to hide, they become what other people think they will be. However, these are stereotypes of introverts. “A 2008 study published in the Journal of Motor Behavior found that introverts take a longer time to process information than extroverts…because they process more thoughtfully than extroverts do-they take extra time to understand ideas before moving on to new ones.” (Breit, Carly)1. Also “While we’re all often flooded with messages that we need to speak up and stand out in order to successful, introverts can actually achieve even more if they hone their natural strengths, says Beth Buelow” (Breit, Carly)1. Introverts has some qualities that extroverts don’t have, they think more and understand more than extroverts, because they are observing the world.  And when people talking about extrovert, they will naturally relate to positive, and many people would like to become extrovert people because they think they will be more confident in the workplace, and they never think there is also disadvantages for extroverts, they can be “too intense or lively, sometimes make others uncomfortable, likely to stand in the spotlight more, rather than giving it to others and may appear to be too confident or cocky.” (Lyon, Nick)2.  Overall, they both have advantages and disadvantages. For me there is no right and wrong for both introvert and extrovert, they are just people’s characters, and the only difference is they think and act different, and the only thing we need to do is don’t look at ourselves with other people’s bias towards introverts (or extroverts), we should look at ourselves in the right way, develop the strengths, and be ourselves, accept ourselves.

The artist who influences my work is Gosia, she is a sculptor, she was born in Poland and now living and working in Toronto. Most of her works are women’s half-body sculptures, first impression of these works is beautiful, but their facial expressions are unemotional, some are close the eyes, look down, or cover with flowers. She said “I believe we are all made up of two worlds, the external which exists outside of our bodies and a vast internal universe, all of our very own. We go through life carefully selecting what we reveal, but our eyes always illuminate more than we think. I create figures that reflect us, hoping to catch a glimpse of their soul.” (Puig, Alicia)3 She focuses more on the internal of human, we always show what people expect us to show, but the internal of us is the real self, my work is also focused on the real characters, and the characters can represent us, we don’t need to hide them.
